Installing Answr

Answr installs from a folder you download rather than from the Chrome Web Store. It takes about two minutes and you only do it once.

1 · Download

Paste your licence key to get the current build. It's the same key you paste into the extension afterwards.

2 · Install in Chrome

  1. Unzip the file. On Windows, right-click it and choose Extract All. On a Mac, double-click it. You'll end up with a folder called answr-extension.
  2. Move the folder somewhere permanent — Documents is fine. Chrome loads the extension from wherever this folder lives, so if you delete it or empty your Downloads, Answr stops working.
  3. Open chrome://extensions — type it into the address bar and press Enter.
  4. Turn on Developer mode using the switch in the top-right corner of that page.
  5. Click Load unpacked (top-left), then select the folder from step 2 — the one containing manifest.json.
  6. Pin it. Click the puzzle-piece icon in Chrome's toolbar and pin Answr so the icon is always visible.
Chrome will show a "Disable developer mode extensions" warning

That message appears for any extension installed this way rather than from the Web Store. You can dismiss it. Answr keeps working — but see the note at the bottom of this page about Chrome sometimes switching folder-installed extensions off.

3 · Activate

  1. Click the Answr icon, or press Ctrl+Shift+Y.
  2. Paste your licence key and hit Activate.
  3. Your plan name appears at the top of the popup. That's it.

Updates

Chrome updates Web Store extensions by itself. It does not update ones installed from a folder, so Answr checks for you: when a newer build exists, a notice appears at the top of the popup.

Updating is the same as installing — download again with your key, unzip, and replace the old folder. Then open chrome://extensions and click the reload arrow on the Answr card. Your licence key and settings survive; you won't need to activate again.

Two things to know

Keep the folder. Chrome reads the extension from that folder every time it starts. Deleting it, moving it, or emptying your Downloads removes Answr. If that happens, download again and repeat step 2 — your licence is unaffected.

Chrome may switch it off after an update. Chrome has been tightening its rules on extensions that did not come from the Web Store, and occasionally disables them after a browser update. If Answr disappears or greys out, re-enable it on chrome://extensions. If Chrome won't let you, email us — see support — and we'll sort it out. This is the trade-off of installing outside the store, and we would rather you heard it here than discovered it on a deadline.
